I always enjoy a good speech. To me, it seems like the idea of a good speech is one that is more highly prized in Canada than most places. I could go on and on about what constitutes a good intelligent speech, but This speech by Al Gore fits all the criteria. Even if you don't agree with the content, he makes a good case for it.

  1. Nick said 6 days later:

"Perhaps most importantly of all, he should apologize to all those men and women throughout our world who have held the ideal of the United States of America as a shining goal, to inspire their hopeful efforts to bring about justice under a rule of law in their own lands."

It occurred to me that, in a perverse kind of way, what Bush has done to completely screw up the US' image as the bastion of democracy may, in fact, serve to empower fledgling democracies to develop their own version of democracty and even come to serve as an example for the "developed" world... Or is that too optimistic?

I don't think that any nation has tried to copy the US style of Democracy exactly. I'm more worried that it will cause people to think twice about demanding a democracy, which as Winston Churchill said "[It] is the worst form of government, except for all those others which have been tried"
