Plug for Chris Page.

So as I'm discovering more and more people are actually reading this thing, I decided to put my erstwhile influence to talk about something I really believe in. Like Pimping music by local bands I like. In that Vein, I bring you

Matt's Record Reviews

So last night I went to the CD Release Party for Chris Page's new CD Decide to stay and swim I first discovered chris page probably about a year and a half ago, and I was really struck by his music. It's very sparse, usually he goes on stage with just his Les Paul, and a really nice amp. It's all really fast-paced, stripped-down power-pop style electric guitar playing, but with no accompaniment at all, just his very good vocals on top of it. The music begs comparison to Billy Bragg, but without all the political content.

Opening for Chris Page was the GoldenSeals, and Andrew Vincent and the Pirates. Read more for a review of the show. Suffice it to say, you should go out right now and buy both Chris Page's CD and AV's If you're still not convinced, check out these tracks by Chris Page and AV

I missed the first band, the Golden Seals, I haven't actually heard them, but everyone who has, has been impressed. Next up, was a very rock-out set by Andrew Vincent and the Pirates. He had a lot of energy that night, and his guitar solos were kick-ass. All in all, it was a really balls-to-the wall kinda set, and it included a power-pop version of "Sleeping Bag" that I really liked, tho Liz wasn't as fond of it as the original version.

Chris Page himself was really good, he started out with just his Les Paul, and ripped through three or four songs, almost with out any stops at all, then he invited Dave Draves on stage to play keyboards on a couple of numbers. Then Dave switched to playing bass, and Scott Terry came up and played drums. I was a little apprehensive, as I've never heard Chris Page in that trio setting, so I wasn't sure I would like it, but the first drum note put my fears to rest. It was a great addition to songs that I'd only heard un-accompanied. It was a great show, and a great night overall. Unfortunately, I didn't take notes as to who played what songs, as I'd had a little too much to drink. Oh well, maybe next time.
